How big a power bank (mAh) do I need for road trips?
For short commutes, a 10,000–15,000mAh power bank is usually enough. For full-day trips or family use, we recommend 20,000–30,000mAh so you can charge several phones and a tablet without running out.
Can I use a normal power bank to jump-start my car?
No. Standard USB power banks are not designed to deliver the very high current needed to start an engine. For that you need a dedicated jump starter power bank like the NOCO GB40, which has special clamps and safety circuitry.
Can a power bank charge a laptop in the car?
Yes, but only if it supports USB-C Power Delivery (PD) at a high enough wattage. For most ultrabooks and MacBooks, aim for at least 45–65W USB-C PD and a capacity of 20,000mAh or more.
Is it safe to leave a power bank in a hot or cold car?
Power banks don’t like extreme temperatures. Very high heat or deep cold can shorten battery life and in worst cases cause damage. Try not to leave them in a closed car in direct sun, and avoid storing them in sub-zero temperatures for long periods.
What’s the difference between a car jump starter and a regular power bank?
A regular power bank is made for USB devices like phones and tablets. A jump starter has high-current output and clamps for your battery terminals, plus extra safety features to handle the heavy load when starting an engine. Many jump starters also include a normal USB power bank function.
How many phone charges do I get from a 20,000mAh power bank?
It depends on the phone, but as a rule of thumb a 20,000mAh power bank can deliver around 4–6 full charges for a typical modern smartphone, assuming some normal efficiency losses.
